History

The crossing over the Umbrail between Santa Maria and Bormio already existed in the middle ages but it was rivalled by a 300m lower and safer path through the Vau and di Fraele Valleys. The pass became more frequented from the end of the 15th century with Austrian delegations passing on their way to Rome and even the troops of Emperor Maximilian I used the pass.

Napoleon’s troops marched over the pass during the French revolution and into the Müstair Valley. North-bound mule-train traders brought with them corn and wine and salt from Halle in the Tirol was transported southwards. Contracts were signed between the Müstair Valley and 6 «road makers» to keep the pass open in winter and summer as far back as 1737.

In 1901 a road, financed by the Swiss Government and the canton, was built from Santa Maria to access the Stilfserjoch road, which was built 75 years earlier. The Swiss Government decreed about the project: «We are building for peace, which is the rule. Economic considerations must take precedence over military considerations». This new road was initially used by horse-drawn wagons and post coaches and around 1925 the first motorised vehicles began using the pass. The route is still as the original and is still sufficient today.
