History

No trading routes go through the Livigno Valley, which was settled relatively late (around the year 1,000 a.d.) and in the beginning was completely isolated in the winter months. In the 15th century as the Bündner pushed into Veltlin to secure their trading route with Milan, the Livigno and Foscagno passes were used to avoid the barrier in Puschlav, enabling them to reach Bormio in Veltlin. In 1805, Napoleon declared Livigno a duty-free area in order to prevent the valley being abandoned, as it was of strategic value to him and his troops.

The Passo di Foscagno has been a way to reach Bormio in winter since the 1950’s. Since the 1960’s, the Munt La Schera tunnel between Punt la Drossa on the Ofen pass and Livigno offers winter-safe access to this duty-free shopping paradise. The ski area has 30 ski lifts and over 100km of ski slopes in winter, which ensures the existance of the local population in this remote valley.
